15. MANAGING ILL HEALTH - Jack’s Undergraduate Empowerment - Empowering Undergraduates - Jack Lookman - Rita Nnamani - Olayinka Carew

 15. MANAGING ILL HEALTH

Whether acute or chronic, navigating college life while managing health issues creates special obstacles that call for self-advocacy, resilience, and flexibility. Students must learn to balance their health demands with their academic aspirations because illness can affect every part of their lives, including social connections and academic performance.

Healthy You And I

When it comes to managing illness as an undergraduate, communication is essential. Students should be proactive in disclosing their health status to their academic counsellors and instructors. Many universities have procedures in place to assist students who are dealing with health issues. These procedures may include longer due dates, altered attendance standards, or different assignment formats. Students and instructors can collaborate to meet students’ academic needs while also managing their health by starting this conversation early.

Building a solid support system is essential. This could include family members who can offer emotional support, friends who can share notes from missed classes, and medical professionals who are aware of the particular difficulties faced by students. Disability support services are another service that many colleges provide, and they can help with extra resources and accommodations.

Academic obligations should take a back seat to self-care and health management. This entails following treatment regimens, leading a healthy lifestyle while taking into account the limitations of the illness, and knowing when to take breaks. Students may need to allot more time for recuperation or medical appointments, making time management even more crucial.

It’s critical that students who are managing their health, cultivate self-compassion and modify their expectations as needed. This could entail rethinking their college experience, taking fewer classes, or delaying their graduation date. Recall that there are many different kinds of success, and that long-term academic and personal success depend critically on putting one’s health first.
