18. KEEPING GOOD COMPANY
The people we surround ourselves with, particularly in our early years as undergraduates, have a profound impact on our experiences, perspectives, and personal development. One’s ability to succeed academically, feel good about themselves, and pursue their goals in the future, can all be greatly impacted by surrounding yourself with motivated, upbeat, successful, positive, empathetic and helpful people.
Strong support systems are frequently correlated with good company. Friends who are aware of the difficulties associated with a university education can celebrate accomplishments, offer emotional support during trying times, and foster a feeling of community. This network of social support can play a critical role in preserving resilience and mental health in the face of professional and personal setbacks.
Our habits and behaviours can be significantly influenced by the people we spend time with. Associating with diligent and aspirational peers can promote a climate of academic performance and motivate us to do our best. In a similar vein, friends who value their health and wellbeing can support healthy lifestyle choices. The adage “we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with” is frequently used to highlight how crucial it is to select our social circles carefully.
Our learning experience can be improved and our viewpoints can be widened by having diverse friendships. Interacting with others from diverse origins, cultures, or academic disciplines can broaden our horizons, make us rethink our preconceptions, and hone our critical thinking abilities. Additionally, these varied exchanges can better equip us for the globalised and interconnected post-university world.
Being a good friend to others is just as vital as surrounding ourselves with positive influences. This entails promoting, respecting, and supporting the ambitions and aims of others. In addition to helping others, when we make constructive contributions to our social networks, we foster an atmosphere of growth and support for one another.
