101. IF YOU ARE IN THE WRONG COURSE ...
Have you ever sat in a class and wondered if you made the wrong decision because you felt so uncomfortable? Although it is a typical occurrence for many undergraduates, it is important to confront this emotion directly, rather than allowing it to grow inside of you. The first step is to honestly assess the reasons behind your feelings. Was it the course material, the opportunities for a career, or possibly outside pressure that steered you in this direction?
Consult your academic advisor, career counsellor, and even experts in your current field of study before making any significant decisions. What seems like the “wrong course” can occasionally be a case of first-year jitters or a short-term obstacle that you can get past. Your current path isn’t always a life sentence because many successful individuals nowadays work in fields unrelated to their original degrees.
Do not feel stuck, though, if you are certain you are headed in the wrong direction, after giving it some thought and consulting with others. Course transfer possibilities are available at many universities throughout your first or second year. Being decisive without being impulsive is crucial. Examine the transfer requirements, do extensive research on the course you want to take, and think about how it fits with your skills and professional goals. The guilt is in continuing along the incorrect route out of pride or fear, not in altering course.
Remember attending college is an investment in your future, and as such, it should be managed carefully. If a change is necessary, make it early, with knowledge, and for the correct reasons. Instead of spending years studying something that doesn’t excite you or fit with your ambitions. Even though there might be financial and affordability implications, your future self will appreciate that you had the guts to make a tough choice.
