60. STUDY TIPS AND TECHNIQUES
Learning efficient study strategies will help you learn more, whether your goal is to improve your GPA or help you pass your classes. Let’s explore some revolutionary study techniques that will make studying easier rather than difficult.
Active recall comes first. Rather than simply going over your notes again, set a challenge for yourself to recall knowledge without consulting your resources. You can explain things aloud by closing your book and using flashcards or practice exams. By using this method, you can improve your recall and pinpoint areas that require additional examination.
Accept the effectiveness of spaced repetition. Spread out your study sessions over time as opposed to cramming right before an exam. Examine the content more frequently; for example, once a day, three days, and finally once a week. By transferring knowledge from short-term to long-term memory, this method facilitates recall during exam time.
Use your imagination when taking notes. To organise knowledge graphically, try using sketch notes, mind mapping, or the Cornell method. Choose a style that makes sense to you and facilitates the connection of ideas. Recall that taking these notes is frequently just as beneficial as going back and examining them afterwards.
Never undervalue the significance of your study space. Choose an area that is comfortable for you; it could be a busy café or a peaceful corner of a library. Play around with the lighting, comfort levels, and background noise. Here’s a pro tip: occasionally switch up where you study. By keeping your brain from connecting knowledge to a particular setting, it can enhance recall.
Audio and video content could also compliment the consumption of text content. These could be curated by you, or obtained from other sources.
If you’re not a big reader, you could browse past examination papers, etc and spend your intellectual resources in targeted study of topics with repeat examination questions.
If your course is very numeric intensive, be sure to avoid making mistakes during the course of examinations, tests or assignments. Getting 100% of the 70% of attempted questions, is better than 40% of 100% of attempted questions.
Also, while doing your exams or tests, start with quick wins, making sure not to be bogged down with questions that may take too much time and energy; if time permits, you could then progress to the more difficult questions.
Lastly, look after yourself. For optimal cognitive performance, a healthy diet, regular exercise, and enough sleep are essential. Include brief breaks in your study sessions to keep your concentration and avoid exhaustion. Remember that a sharp mind is supported by a healthy body.
