80. IF YOU FEEL LIKE GIVING UP ...
Every student has times when it feels like the only way to proceed is to give up. Perhaps you feel overburdened by looming deadlines, have fallen behind in several subjects, or failed a significant exam. The muttered “I can’t do this” thoughts and the crushing weight on your shoulders are signs to reset and rebuild rather than give up. Your turning point, not your breaking point, is this moment of uncertainty.
First, accept that your emotions are real, yet fleeting. Although it is real, academic burnout is temporary. Take a deliberate break for no more than 24 hours to recuperate and rejuvenate. Don’t make any important decisions on your academic future during this time. Instead, make use of this time to rest, work out, or spend time with encouraging friends and family.
Next, divide the overwhelming situation into smaller, more manageable components. Prioritise catching up on one subject if you are behind in three. Write just one paragraph today if your thesis seems unachievable. Make a list of these smaller activities and work on each one individually. Every task you finish increases momentum and gives you back control. Keep in mind that you don’t have to make all the changes at once.
Turn on your support system now. Set up meetings with your teachers and mentors; they have witnessed innumerable students conquer comparable obstacles. To talk about your difficulties and look into your possibilities, see your academic advisor. Make friends with classmates who can create study groups or exchange study materials. Above all, think about going to for a counselling session.
Lastly, get back in touch with your purpose. What motivated you to attend college? Why did you select your major? Write down your motivations and keep them in plain sight. Keep in mind that this difficult time is teaching you perseverance, resilience, and problem-solving skills that will benefit you long after you graduate.
If you dig into the lives of successful people, they all went through difficult times. But each time they fell, and these were so many times; they got up to continue, and achieve their dreams. Nothing good actually comes easy. You must weather smooth and rough times, in order to attain success.
