83. HABITS AND CONSISTENCY
Developing long-lasting habits that support you throughout your academic journey is more important for college success than occasional outbursts of effort. The secret is realising that little decisions made consistently add up to big results over time. Consider your habits as the foundation for your future achievement, each one advancing your personal development.
Know the important behaviours that support your goals first. Select practical and sustainable habits, such as consistent study schedules, regular exercise, or daily reading. The key is to start small; start with routines that take under five minutes to complete, and then work your way up to more complex ones. For example, read one page a day at first, then more of the habit becomes second nature.
Perfection is not synonymous with consistency. Be prepared for the occasional setback. Build systems that make poor habits more difficult and good habits easier. Keep your phone in a different room while studying, for example, or prepare your study materials the night before. Make the most of environmental design by creating a welcoming and distraction-free study area.
Recognising habit triggers is essential. Take note of what motivates your present behaviours, both positive and negative. Find out what makes you check social media if it is a continual source of distraction. Positive habits that fulfil the same psychological demand should be substituted for bad ones. Try taking a quick walk or doing some breathing exercises, for instance, if you find yourself scrolling through social media when you are worried.
Use a basic journal or app to keep track of your routines, but do not get caught up in trends. Instead, concentrate on creating a routine that is adaptable and resilient to the peaks and valleys of college life. Celebrate small wins and take lessons from failures. Remember that maintaining a reasonable habit over time is preferable to burning out while striving to be flawless. Progress, not perfection, is the aim.
