86. OVERCOMING YOUR WEAKNESSES
Everyone has shortcomings; how you handle them is what counts. Consider weaknesses as opportunities for strategic development rather than as irreversible constraints. This change in perspective is important for both intellectual and personal development. Your shortcomings are only areas or skills that require more work or alternative methods; they do not define you.
Determine your main areas of weakness that have a direct bearing on your academic and personal development first. Be precise; rather than stating, “I’m bad at maths,” name specific topics or abilities that you find difficult. Prioritise the areas of weakness that have the biggest impact on your goals. Keep in mind that strategic growth is about picking your battles carefully; you do not have to take on everything at once.
Create specialised plans for every area of weakness. Join a debating group or enrol in a communication course if you are anxious when speaking in front of an audience. Divide the fear into small parts; for example, present to small groups first, then to bigger audiences. Use productivity tools and establish clear deadlines if time management is difficult for you. Use apps, reminders, or accountability partners to assist you overcome these obstacles.
It is impossible to overstate the importance of intentional practice. Make time specifically for working on your areas of weakness. Make a well-organised study schedule to address your academic shortcomings. Utilise a variety of learning tools, such as study groups, practice problems, and movies. Also leverage relevant academic and non-academic staff, as well as your peers.
Keep in mind that everyone learns differently, so try out several approaches until you discover one that suits you.
