124. IS GOOD CHARACTER MORE VALUABLE THAN MONEY?
You will have to make many choices during your time in college that will put your morals and character to the test. Financial success is a valid goal, but it is important to recognise that moral qualities, such as honesty, integrity, and ethical behaviour, are more valuable than money. As you negotiate internships, part-time work, and career decisions, this becomes very important.
Your personal brand, which accompanies you throughout your career, is your character. While material belongings can be lost and money can change, a great reputation based on moral integrity is a priceless asset. Consider the professions and business leaders you most like; it is likely that their success is based on their dependability, honesty, and moral judgement, in addition to their financial accomplishments.
Choosing to uphold high ethical standards in the classroom can require standing up for what is right, even when it is controversial, properly citing sources in your study, or refusing to cheat in an exam, even when others do. Despite being difficult, these experiences mould your personality and create behavioural patterns that will help you in your future professional endeavours. Possessing good character frequently opens doors that money cannot purchase, such as mentors’ respect, meaningful connections with others, and coworkers’ trust.
Keep in mind that developing excellent character is about continuously choosing to do the right thing, even when it is challenging or inconvenient, rather than about being flawless. Your character will frequently be put to test as you move from college to the working world. More than the amount of money in your bank account, the choices you make in these situations will determine who you are. Putting money into developing your character today will yield greater dividend later in life, in ways that go beyond material value.
