191. DO YOU LEAVE WORK TILL THE LAST MINUTE?
Have you ever been given an assignment with a 2-weeks deadline, and you ended up doing the assignment the night before D-day? That's procrastination screaming your name! Procrastination is commonly found among college students, the tendency to leave work until the last minute is a recurring theme. How helpful has this practice been? However, most people attach these negative behaviours to their temperaments “I am choleric, I work well under pressure”. You may be able to accomplish a great amount of work within a short time but this disreputable nature will be futile to your academic performance.
Why choose to rush when you’ve got ample time to get the task done before the last minute. Procrastination questions your integrity and efficiency. When in a rush, mistakes are inevitable and these mistakes can have terrible repercussions not just to your performance as an individual, but to your general well-being.
Furthermore, procrastination can pull an above average student to an average student due to overconfidence. “As far as there is result, how good the result is does not matter” mindset limits your ability thereby preventing you from making extra effort where necessary. What has become a constant practice has a lot to do with your cognitive abilities. There is need to change your thinking pattern as a college student. Activities can be done better and faster if not done under pressure. Set realistic goals, break large tasks into manageable chunks which will create a sense of urgency and encourage timely action.
Additionally, identifying your motivation and academic dynamics can help identify the underlying cause of procrastination and implement targeted strategies. Don’t wait. The time will never be just right. Study that book when you have to, get that job done when you ought to, be the best at what you do and avoid procrastination.
Also remember that, things, outside your control, could happen at the last minute; you could become unwell; there could be family emergencies; there could be multiple assignments; there could be technical problems with your computer; etc.
Jack’s Life Lessons For Teenagers
If your mindset, at this stage of your development, is about deferring tasks to the last minute; you may continue such habits in your working life. There might be stiff penalties if you don’t attain targets. Your career progression could be impeded; and your integrity and dependability could be undermined.
