 199. IS HARD WORK AN OUTDATED VIRTUE?

You may question whether the conventional idea of hard work is still relevant in a time of automation, artificial intelligence, and immediate satisfaction. With headlines full of technology upheavals and ‘overnight’ successes, it is easy to think that automation and clever shortcuts have made hard work obsolete. But the truth is more complex and, perhaps surprisingly, makes hard effort more important than ever.

Jack’s Empowerment

Hard work is still necessary, but the digital revolution has changed how we do it. The modern concept of hard work includes ongoing learning, flexibility, and mental toughness in addition to physical or repetitive exertion. Human creativity, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and the capacity to negotiate intricate social relations cannot be replaced by AI, even though it can process data and perform repetitive jobs.

Think about the most prosperous people in any industry, such as tech entrepreneurs, scientists, athletes, or artists. Their accomplishments are the result of many hours of focused practice, perseverance, and learning from mistakes. In addition to having a brilliant idea for Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg devoted numerous hours to learning about user behaviour, code, and platform adaptation. In a similar vein, elite athletes continue to devote thousands of hours to honing their skills in spite of the availability of sophisticated training aids.

Becoming Organised

In fact, the standard for what qualifies as valuable labour has increased in the digital age. The ability to synthesise information, analyse critically, and come up with creative ideas becomes more valuable as regular jobs may be mechanised. These days, hard work entails keeping up with quickly changing technologies, acquiring cross-functional abilities, and establishing deep professional connections.

In other words, the concept of hard work remains the same, but its application may change.
