 26. ARE YOU LETTING PROCRASTINATION STEAL YOUR TIME?

One of the main obstacles to maintaining organisation and accomplishing your goals is procrastination.  Many people procrastinate because they believe they have plenty of time, yet they end up rushing at the last minute.  Your obligations grow more demanding, the longer you put them off, which feeds a vicious cycle of worry and annoyance.  It is time to take charge of your time and start moving forward rather than making excuses, if you frequently deal with procrastination.

Lack of defined priorities is one of the primary causes of procrastination.  Tasks accumulate without a systematic approach, making it hard to know where to begin.  Avoidance results from this ambiguity, because you might feel too overwhelmed to start. The first step in breaking this tendency, is to prioritise your tasks.  To arrange your timetable and establish reasonable due dates, use a planner, to-do list, or smartphone app.  It is simpler to act when you know exactly what has to be done, and when.

Dividing complicated activities into manageable chunks is another strategy to fight procrastination.  Important tasks are sometimes put off because they appear excessively challenging or time-consuming.  Break up your chores into smaller, more manageable chunks rather than attempting to finish everything at once.  For brief work sessions, like 25 or 30 minutes, set a timer and take a brief break afterward.

Consistency and discipline are necessary to overcome procrastination, but the benefits outweigh the costs.  You’ll feel more accomplished, be less stressed, and be more productive, when you stop putting things off, and start taking action.  You’ll have more time to go over your work and get better outcomes, rather than racing to the last minute.  Starting is crucial, because momentum will propel you forward when you take the initial step.
