37. ARE YOU WASTING TIME ON WASTED EFFORT?
It is easy to get caught up in activities that appear important, but aren’t really significant in the long term. Many people spend their days reacting to distractions, completing unnecessary chores, or focussing on things that do not help them achieve their goals. At the end of the day, they are fatigued but unfulfilled. To become properly organised, you must learn to discriminate between what is vital, and what is only occupying your time.
One of the most common ways people waste time is by engaging in pointless distractions. Social media, excessive TV, continuous scrolling, odd tasks, unnecessary arguments, gossip, may easily consume hours of your day. While relaxation is beneficial, excessive unintended time-wasting leaves little room for significant achievement. The easiest approach to avoid this is to establish clear priorities. Consider whether this task will help you accomplish your goals. If the answer is no, then reduce your time spent on it.
Another important source of lost time is accepting projects that do not correspond with your priorities. Many people accept obligations out of obligation, habit, or a fear of disappointing others. While assisting others is beneficial, overcommitting to unnecessary chores depletes your time and energy. Instead of instantly agreeing on everything, consider whether a task is genuinely important, before committing to it. Protecting your time allows you to focus on what is truly important.
Time is a finite resource that cannot be replenished. Being organised is more than just arranging tasks; it is also about making good use of your time and resources. You can get more done in less time by removing extraneous distractions, focussing on meaningful work, and defining clear priorities. Stop wasting time on things that don’t matter and instead focus your efforts on what will actually take you forward.
