 6. PRIORITISATION

Knowing what to do first is one of the most difficult aspects of maintaining organisation.  It is easy to become overwhelmed by a lengthy to-do list and to flit between chores without actually completing any of them.  Setting priorities lowers stress and increases productivity by assisting you in concentrating on what matters most.  Effective task sorting will help you better manage your time and get more done without becoming tired.

The Eisenhower Matrix is a fantastic tool for work prioritisation.  Tasks are categorised using this method into four groups: neither urgent nor important, urgent but not important, important but not urgent, and urgent and important.  While important but not urgent chores should be scheduled, urgent and important tasks should be completed right away. Activities that are neither urgent or important should be reduced or removed, whereas not urgent but important minor activities can frequently be assigned.  By making sure you concentrate on what is really important, rather than responding to everything at once, this straightforward method helps you avoid needless stress.

The 80/20 rule, sometimes referred to as the Pareto Principle, is another useful method for setting priorities.  It implies that 20% of efforts yield 80% of the results.  To put it another way, not every task has the same effect.  Decide which high-value tasks are most important to achieving your goals and give them precedence over less important ones.  If you’re a student, for instance, concentrating on important tasks and tests will have a greater effect than devoting excessive time to small readings.

Setting priorities involves more than simply deciding what to do; it also involves understanding when to say no.  Over-commitment is a problem for many, since they don’t want to let people down.  On the other hand, taking on too much, can result in burnout and lower output.  You can concentrate on what’s really important, when you learn to set limits and refuse jobs that don’t fit with your goals.
